Corfu,
was not given the name "Emerald Island" for no reason.
The greenest of all the Greek islands, Corfu's natural beauty is
hidden under a cloak of emerald green, with a mountainous skyline
plunging into the bluest of blue waters.
The Island has 205 different villages and is the second
largest of the Ionians islands after Kefalonia.
The chief product of the island is olive oil which
is considered to be among the best in Greece. The island also grows
Kumquat - a small orange of Chinese origin which is made into a
sweet or a liqueur.
Corfu is only open to tourists for 6 months of the year. The season
starts in May and closes at the end of October. May is a quiet month
and the weather is mild, not too hot. July and August are the hottest
and busiest months reaching temperatures in the mid 30's and even
up to the 40's. September and October are not as busy as mid-season,
the temperature does get lower, but it is still a good time to come
if you want a relaxing holiday. The season is then over and many
of the Greeks travel to the mainland. Corfu in in the winter is
quite cold and it's even been known to snow.
