I am Ted Howard desperately seeking Annie Petrie

Connie Alexander (nee Tomsett)
My name is David Giddings and my mother, Gladys Tomsett, was born in Ashurstwood in 1901. Gladys had a brother, Arthur, and he had two daughters one who emigrated to Canada. The other daughter, Connie, married Maurice Alexander and remained in the village at least until the late 1970's. Does anyone know of the where abouts of either Connie or her two daughters as I would love to make contact to explore some of our mutual family history.
If there is anyone who can help it would be greatly appreciated. greenfoot@talktalk.net

WW2 Canadian Troops in Southern England
I would be very interested to hear from anyone with information about the Canadian troops stationed in Tylehurst Farm (then owned by Colonel Charles Needham, Life Guards), near Forest Row, Sussex, UK during the Second World War (particularly those who were there around Christmas time in 1943).
Perhaps you know the Gatton family… Edgar James (Joe) Gatton, Gertrude Mabel Gatton (nee Pratt), Eileen Gatton? The head gardener at the time was called Mr. Kneller. Other people in the area at that time are the Hambro children (Jocelyn Hambro, Anthony Hambro, Simon Hambro); Mr. Moses Pannett (Kenchington Stores); the Clark and Simmond family at South Park Cottages and the Spring family at Mudbrooks Farm.
I believe that the main regiment stationed in Forest Row at that time was the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps (RCASC), whilst The Queen's Canadian Own Rifle Brigade were close by in Ashdown Forest and Pippingford Park.
If anyone has any information then please contact me.

I have never seen them due a lack of communication between my dad and his first wife since their divorce over twenty years ago. All i know about them is their names: Edward Hartnoll who is in his mid-20's with a daughter called Chelsea and my sister Rebecca Hartnoll also in her mid-20's. I am trying to locate them and im having no luck elsewhere, so i was wondering if you could point me in the right direction. jameshartnoll1@hotmail.com

We are desperately looking for Liz Somers-Smith. We served in the WRAF at HQBFG Rheindahlen together in the early sixties. On leaving the WRAF she went to Australia, we last heard from her when she visited us in 1975. We know she was in Alice Springs in 1973. She has a twin sister and we know they lived in East Grinstead. Perhaps her family could help us, we have tried everything we can think of to find her. I went to the EG Grammar School.
During the latter war years until 1947 and would dearly love to hear news of my old classmates and others from those days. My name is David Huxley and I finished up in 5B, We were quite a small class after the war as many of my contemporaries had moved back to London. I would like to hear of/from Bill Bax (father was projectionist at Radio Centre), Joihn Grey, Peter Lawrence, Gillian Silvester, John Walker, "Bunny" Austin and Josephine Barlow - and any others who remember me.
I lived in Copthorne From 1936 to 1954 and used to travel on the 424 bus in morning and the 434 bus home. Among the staff in thoise days were Mr. and Mrs Sandall, Mr. Slatter, Mr. Bain. Miss Broadway and Miss Edwards. I have moved around since leaving East Grinstead area and now live in Birmingham but have lived and worked in Cambridge, Stevenage, Ipswich and Holland before settling in the Midlands. I look back on my schooldays as being very happy ones and the EG Grammar School was a great place to be educated

Hi all,
this message is a search for two people actually. Firstly, I am looking
for Paul Cook, whom I stayed with for a couple of days back in March of
1993 while part of a junior rugby tour from Duncan, BC, Canada. He was
my host/billet, and he and his family were very accomodating, and I'd
like to get in touch with him again. He'd be about 28/29 yrs old by now,
and I believe he used to live on Merlin Way (?).
Secondly, I am searching for a gentleman named Paul, whom I have
actually never met. I have unfortunately forgotten his name, but he
responded to my first post about 3-4 years ago (for the previously
mentioned fellow), with regards to supplying a place to stay for my wife
and I while I explored beautiful EG and the surrounding regions.
I have thought of him frequently since that time, surprised and
delighted that he would extend such a generous invitation to a complete
stranger, and would like to be in contact with him again.
Cheers,
Bricklen

Who owned it in the 50´s and 60´s and who lived there?

Old Feather.
Two ancient former pupils of East Grinstead County School, Windmill Lane,
Dave Gibbons (ex Nutley) and Joe Harris (ex Colemans Hatch) both long
resident in Australia, but who have only very recently regained contact for the first time since army days in 1946, would like to hear from any Old Feathers of their era (1937-1942) who remember them. We are concerned that very few former pupils of those days are registered with the Friends Reunited Website. Surely we are not the only survivors. Think about it and Go to it! Hello.. I used to live in Copthorne and attended Imberhorne County
Secondary from 1959 to 1963. I am trying to find old friends who used
to hang out at the "top of the town" and the Sackville Youth Club. I
moved to Canada in 1967 and have been back to E.G a few times since.
I am looking for people who were the "Rockers" (although we preferred
the term "motorcycle enthusiasts") of the early 60's such as John
Parkes, Andy Goodhind, John Grinham, Simon Armstrong, "Thick", and
others who recall our many hours in "Fortes" cafe and other hang outs
like the "Rose & Crown". One friend (John Howis) died in a traffic
accident 10 years ago but anyone who knew him would likely know me and I
would appreciate any contact.
Any info I have found regarding Imberhorne School bears no resemblance
to the school I knew...has the place been torn down and re-built??
Any contact would be appreciated, and no tid-bit of info is too trivial.
Have a great day

He was from Carrick-on-Suir in Ireland, born 1909, and after a lifetime with the American and British army wrote a book called Soldier for Hire in 1962. He joined an army in 1926 and was still in the BA in 1962. In the book he talks of marrying an Irish nurse called NANGLE (sorry no first name given) and in 1962, when his book was published, his wife and 2 children (again, no names given in the book) were living in East Grinstead. Does anyone know the whereabouts of this family? crosseyc@yahoo.co.uk

GRAMMAR PROJECT
I am involved with the association that encompasses the intake of 1953, and
indeed it is my task to attempt to trace ex pupils who belong to that class of East Grinstead County Grammar. During the last year I have been producing
a Millennium Yearbook that I am issuing to the entire Class of 53. The 72
pages are devoted to the pupils written contributions concerning their
memories of the school. I am now considering producing a much larger
version covering the memories of all those who attended the school, NO MATTER WHAT YEAR I would like to know if you would be prepared to submit an article in due course, almost anything will be acceptable. especially photos that can be reproduced and returned. Tjhengist@hotmail.com

Info on baldwins hill school!
Dear Sir
I am a 34 yr old guy in India. I was in East Grinstead in 1978 for the year when my father was taking training in the Queen Elizabeth hospital. I used to study in the local county Baldwin's Hill School. I have faint memories of those days. I wonder if there is anybody who was in Baldwin's Hill school in 1978. I and my brother were the only two Indian kids so we were well known. Does the school still exist? Does anyone have any information on Mrs.Mackney who taught at the school? I would like to know if there are any people who were fellow students in third grade in 1978.

My people are from East Grinstead area, having operated a small store there for 50 plus years. Their name was Dival/Divall (spelling?). The senior Mrs. Dival was a Rumary.
Her father, George John Rumary, apparently had many stories told about him. No one knows where or cares where he is buried. I do! My grandfather Dorsey Ernest Rumary
was born Nov 27, 1872 at Horsted Keynes to this George John and Jennie /Jenny/Jane Tingley who died sometime in the 1870s. George John married twice more. One of his and Jane's daughters reportedly was killed in a balloon ascension act in India. I'd like verification of rumors and also news of any relatives I may have there. Irene gimarq@aol.com

I am a postgraduate student doing art research in Dunedin New Zealand. My research focuses around the Dunedin Artist, Mabel Hill. (Mrs. John McIndoe) Mabel died at East Grinstead in 1956 and is buried at Mount Noddy Cemetery. She had four children, one of whom was Dr. Archie McIndoe, who will be well known to you and your readers. He is known for his work as a plastic surgeon, particularly the important work he did with burn victims during and after the War. I believe that the Queen Victoria Hospital has a wing named after him. Mabel painted all her life, some of her
work is held here at the Hocken Library in Dunedin and there is other work or hers held throughout the country in public collections.
Mabel went to live in East Grinstead to be near her son Archie. I am sure that she would have painted portraits of various people associated with the Hospital and even
other portraits of people living in the area. She loved painting landscape and may well have painted various landscapes in the lovely county of Sussex.
Through your newspaper would you perhaps bring to the attention of people living in East Grinstead who read your publication, my request for information about Mabel Hill.
I am sure there will be people living who may remember her and importantly may hold a painting or paintings of hers.
Or they may like to write to me at the following address:
Jennifer Hopkinson
Moray Gallery
55 Princes Street
Dunedin
New Zealand.
Thank you for your assistance.
With best wishes

Hi, My name is Cortes Alexander and I'm writing from New York City. I attended a school called Aston House way back in 1968. I was only in the 3rd grade, but I remember it as vividly as if it were yesterday. I'm writing to find out what has happened to the school, if it's still around etc. as I'm planning a trip back to England and would love to see my favorite old school. I recall football practice on Wednesday, and horseback riding on Thursday, followed by
Drama...those were the days. If someone could fill me in with info about the school, I'd be most grateful. Thank You, Cortes Alexander CortsTrio@aol.com

My father was a Canadian soldier who stayed in this building as it was used as their barracks. He said that either the structure itself or the area it was in was known as Blindly Heath or Blinely Heath.
