The East Grinstead Website was established in June 1996 as a privately-funded experimental attempt to "put the town on the map", attract visitors, promote local shopping and tourism and promote local businesses on the Internet.
From modest beginnings of perhaps 20 pages it has grown to over 550, covering all aspects of community life, discussion, what's on, entertainment and sports. It has been visited not only by locals and Brits in general but by hundreds of people from overseas, and a steady stream of e-mails come in from people asking about all sorts of things from their ancestry and requests for historical information, to the best place to stay when visiting, etc.
The Site has been approved as a partner in the D.T.I. "IT for All" initiative, is a member of the Sussex Community Internet Project, and has forged strong links with the local Council, Arts and Tourism bodies.
It is listed as a prime example of a Community Development Web-based Application at the Virtual University for Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (http://www.vuSME.org).
Local residents are invited to participate in the site by sending in regular news reports of their particular activity or interest. Regular contributions to the Magazine sections on sports, humour and village activities are currently ongoing.
The site revamp took place November 2004 and a further 200 or so pages have been added to the site with new sections to interest people of all ages. The site now has something for everybody. A kids section, a health and beauty section, a sports section and much more.
Future plans include the partial translation of the site into foreign languages, the addition of some multimedia (sound, video) to the site, increasing local participation, and co-operating with the Council-backed Public Access Points for local residents to be able to access the information from public locations.
The site is honoured to have received the following awards:
- over 30,000 individual pages viewed per month, Autumn '05.
- Growth rate approx 10% per month through 2005.
